Owl Class - Nursery & Reception 2025 - 2026
Mr Roberts
Miss Van Onselen
Our aim at Newtown is to inspire and excite children at the beginning of their learning adventure and provide every member of our EYFS with a sense of awe, wonder and pride in their everyday learning and achievements. We are excited to welcome all our children for their first term of the school year.
In literacy this term, our reception children are diving into the text ‘The Something’. We will be using this book to inspire and ignite our imaginations as we begin to wonder what the 'something' is, that lurks in the deep, dark hole...
Whilst our Nursery children will explore the classic book 'A Tiger who came to Tea'. As well as some other story treasures.
To transpire our love for reading, we will be sharing lots of story books and poems throughout the day as well as in our shared reading sessions.
At Newtown, we use Ready Steady Phonics to teach children phonics and letter formation. More information on how to support your child at home can be found on our home learning page.
We will also continue our maths journey using the scheme 'White Rose Maths' as we develop our numeracy skills. This term will see us explore numbers to five whilst looking at shapes and groups also.
Additionally, in other areas of our currciulum we will be exploring our theme of 'animal antics!' through science investigation. Plus getting mucked in with creating art sculptures with clay and discussing geographical environments home and away. We will also be beginning our RE learning journey where we will discover 'What makes us special' to further our understanding of our school vision of:'Let your light shine!'
Home-learning:
Children in Reception will be sent a decodable reading book home each week, this book will have been taught and practiced in school during the week previous. We suggest reading with your child every day for around 5 minutes. This will help consolidate their phonics knowledge, help with their reading fluency and holistically aid children in all aspects of our curriculum. We will also be sending learning sheets home which will help children practice their phonics sounds knowledge from that week.
You can find lots more information to support learning at home in our home learning section.
PE:
The children's PE lesson will take place on Friday afternoon. Children are required to come to school wearing their full PE kit. However we dvelop our physical development throughout the week with various continious provision activities.
Nursery
Our Nursery children will enjoy and retell the classic book of 'A Tiger who came to tea' as well as enjoying other key texts like 'Never tickle a tiger'.
This is as well as other story gems that the children enjoy as they develop their love for reading with us.
Super Sounds activities will see our nursery children to learn the vital skills in preparation for their Ready Steady Phonics lessons in Reception. Activities include alliteration, syllables, intial sounds and oral blending.
The children will explore Maths throughout the environment as they sort, match, make patterns, explore shape, count and recognise numbers.
Through Understanding the World the children will delve into their own and each other's lives as we begin to get to know our friends a little bit more. We will also look at key events that happen during the autumn term, such as bonfire night, Rememberance Day, harvest and Christmas. We will also learn how to care for and respect our natural environment during our forest school sessions whilst observing what is happening around us... what is happening to the plants and trees? Why do we need to start wearing our coats.
In Expressive Arts and Design they will learn a range of nursery rhymes and continue to explore different medias and materials.
