Shine As A Person
Newtown children let their light shine brightly.
PSHE is an essential part of the curriculum which aims to allow children to develop into healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are growing both personally and socially. It provides a means of exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live and how they can make a valuable contribution to the world in which we live in.
PSHE aims to provide pupils with the confidence to cope with many of the moral, social and cultural issues that many pupils experience whilst growing up. Pupils are given the opportunity to understand the importance of their rights and responsibilities and to appreciate what it means to belong to a diverse community. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
British Values
At Newtown Church of England Primary School, we develop and promote British Values throughout our general school ethos and within our whole-school curriculum offers. We aim to ensure that children become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and leave our setting fully prepared for life in Modern Britain.
The key values we teach provide children with the fundamental knowledge and skills they need to contribute to society. These include:
Democracy – An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process.
The Rule of Law – An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their well-being and safety.
Mutual Respect – An understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination.
Tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs – An acceptance that other people have different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.
Individual Liberty – An understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law.
50 Things To Do Before You Leave Newtown - What Adventures Will You Have?
At Newtown, we have launched the ’50 Things to Do Before You Leave…’ initiative. This is a list of fifty activities or experiences that we think all children should complete at Newtown before they move on to secondary education.
The list is all about the personal development of the child and looks to enhance the primary school journey beyond the classroom.
Designed to broaden horizons, the children will all have a ‘50 Things Passport’ which will be stamped throughout their time at Newtown and be presented to them when they leave us. What adventures will children have before they leave Newtown?
